A Winning Situation
Regardless of your take on the war, a timeline for withdrawing our troops from Iraq seems like a win-win situation. While just two years ago, Iraqi president Jalal Talabani stated that he did not support the idea of American troops leaving, it now looks like U.S. and Iraqi officials are agreeing on a timeline for complete withdrawal.
For the struggling U.S. economy, that means less money spent overseas and more money diverted to the American people and issues more directly affecting us. That idea is even more welcome as certain indicators are pointing to a further slowing down in the months ahead.
For the Iraqi government, it means a chance to stand on its own two feet and show everybody else that it can take care of itself. And for oil? Capturing headlines in that market seems to be Russia’s present goal, so while there’s a possibility oil could drop at the news of the timeline, it might not be as much in the Middle East’s hands as before.
However, Russia’s continued hostility towards its much smaller neighbor means that defense stocks have a good shot of staying high for a while to come.
