Who Would’ve Thought?
Who would’ve thought?
That saying has been circulating the stock market and business world for quite a while now about a long and tiresome list of topics. For example:
- Who would’ve thought the housing market would tank so badly?
- Who would’ve thought that Bear Stearns would fall?
- For that matter, who would have predicted Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and AIG all needing to be bailed out?
I’ll spare you the rest, but I’m sure you have a couple others to add yourself.
And now, there’s one more, and this is a big one…
- Who in the world would have ever thought the dollar would actually gain on currencies it’s been losing out to for some time now?
I can tell you right now: I definitely didn’t. Especially not now with our stock market roiling like a ship on a storm-tossed ocean, our economy probably heading into a recession, and our country still involved in various military altercations.
Yet here it is, surging against the Canadian dollar, British pound and euro in multi-year highs as recession fears hit everybody else as well.
The euro traded at $1.2842 in early New York trading, and the pound was valued at $1.6382 after Bank of England governor Mervyn King alluded to further interest rate cuts in the future.
That same kind of move can probably be blamed for why the Canadian dollar fell a bit as well.
And really… Who would’ve thought?
