Werewolves and Vampires Take Over City
It’s Monday morning, and the news is in. Unsurprisingly, taxpayers are mad that they’re going to have to foot yet another bill for somebody else’s stupid decisions. Oil rose on the news of the very likely government bailout, and so did world stocks as everybody sighed in relief that the end of something other than the world might possibly be in sight.
But talk of the financial crisis is stale now. Yes, it’s still relevant, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t all been said before.
So let’s move on to something more unique, intriguing and even possibly inspiring. Why? Because we can, and let’s face it: we want to. At least I do.
Back on August 4th, I wrote a short note on the Twilight series to illustrate how some stocks were still going up in the market, even back during those dreary, boring days when everything just looked bleak, and not completely catastrophic.
Borders (NYSE: BGB) shares went up on the release of the latest book alone, and it was with good reason since it’s still on top-sellers lists. Apparently a world where the supernatural (werewolves, vampires) and the humdrum, everyday life that we’re so accustomed to, equates to a huge success in the business markets.
And how much more humdrum can you get than the city of Forks in Washington state. The place is known for heavy rain and equally dense mists, rusting timber mills thanks to a severe decline in the logging industry that first made the place worthwhile, and unemployment.
Really, it isn’t the place you’d think of to begin any kind of business, much less a profitable one.
But that’s exactly what the current residents are doing. Since their sleepy city has suddenly come into the national and international spotlights, they’re going to capitalize on it by turning it into a tourist attraction featuring vampire tours…
…Which just happen to be very popular. Regardless of whether the location isn’t exactly central to the rest of the country, they’ve been getting business. According to one source, a Marcia Bingham who is the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, they’ve easily had a hundred (mostly female) customers per day.
And it isn’t just the tours themselves that are bringing in profits. The local businesses have seen their cash flow more than double just by changing product names to fit with characters or events in the stories, or hanging story-appropriate signs in their windows.
Now as far as I’m aware, there isn’t currently any way to invest in the growing trend - there’s a movie scheduled to debut later this year, indicating that the series won’t be going away anytime soon - other than putting your money behind one of the major book chains such as Borders or Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS). But maybe, cheesy as this may be, we can find a little hope from Forks, WA, that ingenuity isn’t completely dead and people can make money in some sort of honest, above-the-board fashion.
