The Land Of The Free And The Opinionated
In America, the political landscape has become a nasty war zone, complete with flying ammunition. The landmines and mortar rounds might all be hypothetical, but its amazing the damage they can do.
And of course as always everybody has an opinion. Organizations, high-profile individuals and Hollywood are all jumping into the fray in an attempt to sway voters’ opinion to their candidate of choice.
Here’s a recap of some of the more colorful comments so far this week:
Lynn Forester de Rothschild, a top Hillary fundraiser and member of the Democratic National Committee’s Platform section, has put her two cents in by declaring Democratic nominee Barack Obama to be arrogant with a problem connecting with average Americans. According to Yahoo, she plans on announcing her support for McCain later today.
A common line running through Hollywood these days - and now comes in button form - has been picked up by Tennessee Rep. Steve Cohen as well. In reaction to Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin’s belittling comments about Obama’s stint as a community organizer, the new catch-line seems to be: “Jesus was a community organizer and Pontius Pilate was a governor.”
(For anybody who cares, Pontius Pilate was the man who washed his hands of Jesus’ blood and then handed him over to the mob to do with as they saw fit.)
And there’s a whole entire list of other names getting into the game, from prominent media icons such as the much loved and hated Rush Limbaugh to equally controversial groups such as the National Organization of Women.
The general impression I believe voters are ultimately supposed to take away from the over-all name calling of both part members is this: they’re voting for so-and-so, therefore I should too.
In the growing coverage of everybody who claims to be anybody’s opinion, it’s becoming difficult to focus on the important stuff: like the issues.
