Public Tensions High But Political Drama Down… Kind Of – The Word From Washington

  • The House wants to spend $550 million to obtain eight Gulfstream and Boeing planes for Congressional use. But the Senate - possibly seeing an opportunity to win back some constituent support - began voicing disapproval. Both Democrats and Republicans voiced dissenting views of the plan and pledged to fight the legislation when it came their turn to vote.

  • According to General Stanley McChrystal in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Afghanistan desperately needs to be fortified with more troops, especially in heavily populated areas. He will be presenting his official plan to Washington later this month.

  • As public polls continue to show that the majority of Americans don’t support the president’s healthcare plan, the Obama administration instituted a website meant to clarify what it calls “wild rumors” circulating. Called “Reality Check,” it lists various negative views held by critics concerning the legislation, and then attempts to refute each.

  • Meanwhile, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi made her own attempt to negate the charges, calling protestors’ actions “simply un-American,” for disrupting town hall meetings. However, Republicans were quick to fire back with some choice words of their own. House Republican Leader John Boehner from Ohio, called her accusation “outrageous and reprehensible.”

  • According to Kuwait, Al-Qaeda had plans to attack not only a US military base situated within the country lines, but also target state security offices and government buildings. However, the suspects were apprehended before they could do any damage and confessed to planning at least the attack on the army facility, which was scheduled for roughly August 20.

  • Russia has full confidence in the U.S.’s technological advancements and it doesn’t trust us to use our creations wisely. According to General Alexander Zelin, “Air forces of foreign states - primarily that of the United States - will gain an opportunity to make coordinated, high-precision strikes on a global scale at practically all targets on the territory of the Russian Federation.” And so, to counteract that, Russia will beat its nemesis at the same game, by creating a new air and space defense by 2020.

  • Cracking under pressure from both the Senate and an outraged public concerned with spending, House Democratic leaders said that they could scrap the plans for four new passenger jets “if the Department of Defense does not want these aircrafts.”

  • The president had to take back a statement he made earlier in the week about the AARP supporting his health care legislation that has already caused so much controversy. When the AARP came out and said that they weren’t exactly endorsing it, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs had to clarify that the organization “has said they are certainly supportive and have been for years on comprehensive health reform.”

  • The UK hit back at U.S. critics who have been attacking their healthcare as a model, doing their best to refute claims in a fiery correspondence. “There’s been all these ridiculous claims made by the American health lobby about Obama’s health care plan… and they’ve used the NHS as an example. A lot of it has been untrue,” it accused.

  • Kim Yong-il, a vice minister in North Korea’s Foreign Ministry, made a surprising claim on Friday, that “We always keep the door open to negotiations [with Washington],” a very different message than they had previously been sending.

Despite town hall meetings chock full of very vocal concerned citizens, this political week looks short from the run down above. Let’s hope that our weekend lasts a lot longer.
