They’re Loving It, And Apparently So Are We

They’re Loving It, And Apparently, So Are We

It seems that beer isn’t the only beverage that does well during harder economic times. Add Pepsi to that list according to reported sales earnings for the 2nd quarter. They had a 4.5% gain in North America alone, which considering everything, is better than decent.

And they’re not the only ones. McDonalds, Hershey—and my personal favorite—Panera, aren’t doing that badly either, with each of them reporting profits in one division or another.

Then there’s Amazon, which apparently had a profit of $158 million, coming to 37 cents a share, as compared to this time last year.

So how come these companies are doing better when everything else is slumping so badly?

Amazon is probably an easy one to answer, since you can get some seriously discounted items from its multi-paged website. In the market for a season of Psych? Silver earrings? A new printer? You name it, and it’s probably there. And private owners and companies alike know that. Internet shopping has grown in popularity in the last several months for everything except groceries. At least I haven’t seen those advertised online, though I won’t rule out the possibility altogether.

As for Panera and the like? That isn’t so clear, especially since they—in particular—had to raise their prices due to rising wheat costs. And Pepsi and McDonalds have suffered right along with the rest of the food and beverage industry as transporting rates skyrocketed.

It could be due to great management, or a downgrade in typical family outings: from Red Robin and the Cheesecake Factory to cheaper joints. Or maybe it’s just a loyal customer base. I have to admit that my trips to Panera have become more frequent in recent months. After all, who can say no to an asiago bagel lightly toasted with cream cheese?
