What The Google Caffeine Web Search Site Is Really Made Of

Yesterday, I wrote a critical article on Google’s upcoming, reformed search engine, Caffeine. And despite the highly successful company’s claims that the new product will be ‘faster, better, harder, stronger’ like a Kanye West song, I expressed my doubts about the product.

Then again, I also made my belief very clear that Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) will easily retain its top spot in this particular market.

As I pointed out yesterday, Google is a habit at this point for the majority of web users. You never hear people suggesting that a colleague or friend do a Yahoo search, anymore than they would have recommended an MSN Live search before Bing came out. What you do hear from the clueless but helpful is: “Why don’t you do a Google search?”

Well, after taking a few peeks into the wide and wonderful world of tech blogs, I found a very detailed opinion by one Ben Parr on the subject, from his website: Mashable.com. And let’s just say that he sounds a lot more excited about the new product than I am.

Judging it for speed, accuracy, temporal relevancy (whether it’s better at locating breaking news) and index size, here’s what he found…

The Caffeine Checklist

Speed:             Google: 0.25 seconds

             Caffeine:  0.12 seconds

Aside from the fact that his Internet connection is at least eight times faster than mine, that’s technically a pretty decent difference if you consider that Google cut their previous search time in half. Though I do have one question on the matter, which amounts to: Who cares?

I’m not sure if I could notice the difference between a twenty-fifth of a second and a tenth of a second if I really concentrated on it. Now somebody who doesn’t have Verizon Fios or some comparable high-speed Internet service might notice the difference between 3 seconds and 1.5 however, which is much more significant.

Accuracy:            Mr. Parr liked some parts of Caffeine in this regard, but found himself less convinced in this area.

“You’ll notice that many of the blended search options, like image search and news, don’t appear in the new version…

“Both sets are very accurate, but subjectively, the set displayed by the new Google search more accurately reflect what a user would be looking for…

“… The new search cares more about keywords than the last. You could clearly see it cared about the full title and brought up more results with those keywords. Both brought a different set of results, but the new search was more relevant.

Winner: The New Google (tentatively)”

Temporal Relevance:            While he found the old version and new version “about the same,” he still did note how Caffeine ordered the results a little more particularly.

Index Size:            Funny enough, it appears that Google looses out to Microsoft Corporation (Nasdaq: MSFT) in this regard, with Bing having much more data at its fingertips to work with.

The Good, The Bad And The Better

Even after that thorough examination of the three sites (Google, Caffeine and Bing), Parr still came to the same conclusion that I did: that the timing of the launch is scheduled especially to lure any wayward customers away from the shiny new Bing and back to the Google centerfold.

As I said before, I doubt Google really has all that much to worry about in this regard, at least for a while.
