Financial Jungle
Â
The U.S. banking sphere currently resembles the food chain more than any civilized setting, complete with scavengers and soon-to-be carcasses. With more banks announcing dismal earnings, lowered stock prices, and massive levels of debt, you would think that the bigger, stronger companies would pounce on the opportunities set before them with fork and knife. Right?
Â
But these are very cautious vultures dominating the banking scene these days. While there’s plenty of speculation on who will take over whom, few acquisitions are actually being made. At a time when they could offer ridiculously low figures to acquire such like-minded assets, it’s hard not to wonder why don’t just move in for the feast already.
Â
There are probably two very good reasons why they’re not, the first being that most experts are speculating that the worst is yet to come; we won’t see any real light until mid to late 2009. And that means that while deals might very well be sweet now, they could be even sweeter by say… December.
Â
The other reason pertains to the same line of thinking. The current crisis is significant and runs deep. Banking companies haven’t just been hurt; they’ve been crippled. In the bank-eat-bank world we’re living in, purchasing a fellow financial institution means purchasing it’s problems, massive debts and all. And – understandably – that doesn’t make the picture very appetizing.
