Are We Done Yet?

Is it the end? It might be - or something very close to it - in the terms of actually formulating the plan. But as for the end of the mind numbing, hideously depressing media coverage on the bailout, I don’t expect an end anytime soon. I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about it for at least a week or two to come as the actual details of the bailout slowly trickle down to the mainstream media, and through them to the average American.

But good news on this dreary Thursday afternoon: It looks like we might actually be getting somewhere on the bailout. At least, I think that’s good news. Then again, maybe it would be erroneous to combine a $700 billion plan using taxpayer money and the word “good” in the same sentence.

Still though, they’ve “reached a fundamental agreement” according to Senator Chris Dodd, D-Conn., and are “very confident that [they] can act expeditiously.” Senator Bob Bennett, R-Utah, echoed the sentiment by claiming that he believes they “indeed have a plan that can pass the House, pass the Senate [and] be signed by the president.”

Mark it in the history books boys and girls. It’s been documented: a Democrat and Republican are in agreement.

Apparently, even as of noon, there weren’t too many key problems remaining. And in fact, one member of the Senate even felt good enough about the plan that he made a joke about its progress, saying that while he’d take any excuse to go visit the Whitehouse, he didn’t think that the meeting later on between Senators Obama and McCain, President Bush, and several key lawmakers, would even be necessary.

I’d love to say well done Senate, but since I don’t know anything about the actual details of their revisions - nor to my knowledge does anybody else, since senators wouldn’t answer any direct questions during their press conference - I’ll hold my applause for a little while longer.
